  1. A semiprecious variety of chalcedonic silica
  2. (Si02) in which the crystals are too fine to
  3. be detected under a microscope, a state known
  4. as cryptocrystalline. It has straight
  5. parallel bands of different colours: milk-
  6. white, black, and red. Sardonyx, an onyx
  7. variety, has layers of brown or red carnelian
  8. alternating with lighter layers of onyx. It
  9. can be carved into cameos.
